Halloween and the craziness that carried over into early November are finally over! Both shows I was involved in got super positive reviews, and the one i did attend in Vancouver was awesome and really packed!
Up next is the Eastside Culture Crawl in Vancouver on November 20th-22nd. Artists in Vancouver’s east side open their studios to the public and give people a chance to chat, hob nob and possibly stumble across empties hidden throughout studios like little easter eggs. My studio is just off of Vancover’s infamous skid row so having the door wide open and unlocked could be an adventure on a few levels!
Dave ‘Pepe’ Petko who curated the Heavy Hitting B-Grade Horrorshow in Whistler said it was a huge success and the organizers of the event have invited him to put on another show next year. October is usually one of the busiest time of year for me, and looks like next year is shaping up to be the same!
Okay, so i think about 85% of the population who has tried to maintain a blog will drop the ball eventually… That being said, i have been a busy little bee and look at me, i’m going to try getting back on the horse!
I’m in two shows at the end of the month: The Heavy-Hitting B-Grade Horror Fest in Whistler BC, and Something Wicked This Way Comes X in Vancouver, BC.
The Heavy-Hitting B-Grade Horror Fest is at 7 pm on the 30th in Whistler at The Fairmont Chateau, 4599 Chateau Blvd.

It’s an independent horror movie festival that has been going strong for 6 years now, and this year, Dave ‘Pepe’ Petko organized the art show that will be in the lobby. Sounds like it’s gonna be a huge event since they’ve changed the space they’re renting in the venue twice already to accommodate for all the tickets they’ve sold. Their initial capacity of 250 sold out after the first few hours the tickets went on sale. They’re up to a capacity of 1,000 and have about 50 tickets left… Unless all those 950 people who bought tickets had ski accidents resulting in brain injury, i’m gonna guess that it’s a great event to check out.
Something Wicked This Way Comes X is the tenth annual Halloween party at Vancouver’s longest running alternative club night, Sanctuary! 23 West Cordova, 9pm-3am

I would basically have no friends and no life if not for that bar since dressing up to go mince around that place is basically the only sort of interaction i have with the general populace. Their Halloween parties are the stuff of legend, and this year they’ve added a third room to showcase local, horror-themed artwork. So really, they’ll have something for everyone: artwork, booze, and pretty girls who have drank too much booze and thus have looser morals (i’m not talking about myself. Really!)
I’ve also updated my website with a new layout and new artwork! And new pictures of my CATS! Yea, CATS! I got another!! His name is Tobey, and i love him a lot but he’s a little bastard since he woke me up about ten times last night. What a sweetie!!
So far, so good with the new painting. There are a few details to tweak in the background, but i need to wait a bit until the paint dries a bit. I’m starting the helmet tomorrow and who knows how that’ll go, but thus far i’m pretty happy with how this is coming along!
It’s sort-of but sort-of-not a companion piece to my last painting… They came from the same initial sketch, but as the idea evolved, it sort of split in two- other than the pose, they’re aesthetically different and (hopefully) evoke different feelings. I’m not sure how i feel about this because they don’t look overly cohesive in the conventional way that a series of work can be, but i really wanted to create these in the way that felt right to me. I guess i’ll just see how it goes!
I, Braineater’s new show Art Crimes opened last friday and will be up for the next few weeks at Subeez in downtown Vancouver. Holy crap, what a fun opening night and what a great show! It was pretty busy in there so i want to go back soon to check it out without the piles of people milling about! Phil Western was freestyling (for lack of a better word) on a super old synth from the 60s, while Jim spoke/sang (uh, what the hell do you call it when someone speaks lyrically?!) some of his song lyrics and poetry over it WHILE DRAWING. It was pretty rad! He was doing these quick sketches on large pieces of paper with a sharpie and just handing them out to people in the crowd! Common consensus with everyone at the event said that it was one of those nights that you would be kicking yourself for missing if you weren’t there.
