Banquet of Broads
The Vancouver Burlesque Festival kicked off this past friday with the Banquet of Broads event showcasing some of the local and international talent that’ll be performing throughout the week. A few of the events include an art show organized by the lovely Nicole Steen of The Pop Tarts, so if you’re planning on attending any of the following, be sure to check it out!
May 6th & 7th: A Wink and a Smile at Sweet Soul and RIO Theatre
May 9th: Red Gala Event at Pat’s Pub
The show was pretty fun actually! I’m generally not a huge fan of burlesque- I’ve been subjected to enough stripper-turned-burlesque acts to tarnish my opinion, and i could probably write an entire post about how deluded it seems to believe that dressing or acting sexy is empowering- but the girls in this show obviously put a lot of thought and effort into their numbers and made them interesting to watch. Each act actually had a concept, unique costume and theme, as opposed to a girl coming onstage in a corset and stripping to 50s music. If you’ve ever thought of checking out a burlesque act, i’d definitely recommend attending one of the nights at this week’s Burlesque Festival since they seem to have picked the cream of the crop!
