All i want to do is bitch about the Olympics.

HEART ON is this Saturday at Box Studios in Vancouver!

I’ve uploaded some pics of my piece for the show to twitter HERE. “That Old Adage” … about 8 x 10, ink & acrylic on tea stained paper. I’m not very good at drawing things that are lovely and sweet, but lately i’ve had sayings like ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ or ‘a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’ on my mind, so i just went from there…!

Vancouver is hosting the Olympics in but a week and a bit, and like most people in my fair city, i want to get the fuck out (and i am!). I’m glad that great articles like this one in Sports Illustrated and this one in The Guardian are letting the world know how the average Vancouverite feels about this train wreck.

The Olympic committee has been touting these ‘Cultural Olympiad’ arts events, but any work or events i have seen/heard about strike me as being safe, lowest common denominator endeavors. Everything i’ve seen so far feels very out of touch with the practicing artists in this city who don’t paint landscapes or carve native art for tourists. I wouldn’t expect any better from a commercialized event like the Olympics, but as they’ve directly impacted our art community with BRUTAL tax cuts, i’ve taken offense. Not that there’s anything anyone can really do. Residents of Vancouver have been prohibiting from protesting or speaking out against the Olympics in any way- you will be steeply fined and possibly given jail time if you even have a sign in the window of your home. Fuck. The. Olympics.
